Tania Hernández Velasco

Tania Hernández Velasco is a de-indigenized filmmaker born in Mexico City. Through poetic, playful and sensorial approaches, her work explores questions about territory, nature, legacy and identity that traverse her body and her intimate sphere. In 2019, she was selected as a Professional Development Fellow at the Flaherty Seminar (Flaherty Institute, NY, USA) and awarded the Charles C. Guggenheim Emerging Artist Award (Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, NC, USA). Her first feature film Titixe (2018), which she directed, produced, photographed, edited and distributed, has been selected in more than 40 international festivals, and received multiple awards and mentions. She holds a Master's Degree in Creative Documentary (2013) and a Postgraduate Degree in Editing (2014), both from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona, Spain). Previously, she studied a BA in Film at CENTRO (Mexico City, Mexico). She is currently working on her second film Mi cuerpo es una estrella que se expande, in collaboration with Semillites Hernández Velasco. The film is supported by FOCINE-IMCINE (2021). With this project, she is currently a grantee of Firelight Media's William Greaves Fund (USA, 2021).

ABOUT Mi cuerpo es una estrella que se expande (My Body is an Expanding Star)

Two siblings make an imaginary pilgrimage through the memory and geography of their Brown bodies in order to discover their beauty and dignity. As they journey through the seas of their stretch marks, the fields of their hair, and the constellations of their moles, their ancestors emerge to accompany them.
