Firelight Media & WMHT are proud to present a special virtual screening and discussion around Stanley Nelson’s The Black Panthers: Vanguards of the Revolution on Thursday, May 12th from 6-8pm ET.
Presented for a national audience on the online public media screening platform OVEE, the evening will feature an extended clip of The Black Panthers followed by a conversation with Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Stanley Nelson and leaders of the Liberation Movement in the Capital Region of New York.
Stanley Nelson is the foremost chronicler of the African American experience working in nonfiction film today. Through Firelight Media, which Nelson co-founded with Marcia Smith, their combined efforts have supported the professional development of more than 100 producers of color.
Author and activist Dr. Alice Green will share reflections on the history of the Liberation Movement in Upstate New York, which she recently published in her book, “We Who Believe In Freedom: Activism and the Struggle for Social Justice. She will be joined by Earl Thorpe, who co-founded The Brothers, a civil rights group based in Albany that pre-dates the Black Panther Party. The conversation will be moderated by Shawn Young, Co-founder of All of US Community Action Group, a contemporary Black-led organization working to lift up marginalized voices in the ongoing pursuit of justice and equity for all.
