PBS Distribution Announces Theatrical Release of The Black Panthers

We are thrilled to announce that PBS Distribution will distribute The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution in select theaters in the fall of 2015.

Beth Hoppe, Chief Programming Executive and General Manager, General Audience Programming at PBS, noted, “This film represents the kind of provocative, thoughtful independent filmmaking that has long been at the heart of PBS’ mission, and we are happy to work with PBS Distribution to steward ‘Black Panthers’ through theatrical, broadcast on PBS stations, and on to VOD and home entertainment.” The Black Panthers is also slated for a special broadcast as part of PBS’ independent film series INDEPENDENT LENS in winter of 2016.

Dear friends, I am compelled to write something to someone somewhere, having just this minute finished watching the film on PBS. I expected it to be well worth my time and attention, but was deeply moved and illuminated in completely unexpected ways, and blown away by the sheer artistry of the filmmaking. I’m white, long concerned with race unity and racial justice – but though my childhood and early adolescence were spent in the Bay Area in the late 60’s and early 70’s, with news of the Panthers always around, I not surprisingly never could break through the contradictions and complexities I saw (especially in the media) to a deeper understanding of their history, even as an adult. I thank Mr. Nelson and all for giving us this great gift. It is an extraordinary piece of work, and I will be thinking about its content for a long time to come.
