Firelight Media is a non-profit organization dedicated to developing emerging documentary filmmakers who tell stories about people, places, cultures and issues that are underrepresented in the mainstream media. Firelight Media’s flagship program is the Producers’ Lab, a mentorship program for independent producers of color. Our sister organization,

Firelight Films, is award-winning filmmaker Stanley Nelson’s film production company. Current projects include the America Revisited series, a set of films on the Black Panther Party, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER

Firelight Media’s Strategic Communications Manager will develop and steward all communications with the primary objectives of increasing organizational visibility, strengthening brand value, enhancing program credibility, and ensuring funders and donors remain informed of organizational achievements, activities, and impact for continued support.

The Communications Manager will develop and implement an effective marketing plan that strengthens connections between the organization and the producers Firelight Media serves to targeted constituencies and new audiences. They will author messaging/content in all communications and networking mediums that amplify the mission, uniqueness, and impact of the organization in the field.

The Manager will also contribute to plans for building Firelight Media’s community engagement services for producers, audience engagement and audience building for documentaries, as well as produce materials to aid in fundraising from individual donors. This is a full-time position, reporting to the President. This person also works collaboratively with the Development Manager, the Founder and Director of the Producers’ Lab, and contracted digital consultants.

Areas of Responsibility

• Develop and implement overarching communications strategy to reach targeted constituencies, and new audiences with benchmarks

• Development, content creation, and management of the organization’s communications vehicles, including monthly e-news, website, and social media accounts (including but not limited to Facebook, WordPress, Youtube, Twitter, Vimeo, Spotify, LinkedIn and Tumblr)

• Work collaboratively with revenue generating staff to enhance communications strategies aligned with targeted revenue generation goals

• Maintain digital files reflecting organizational news and initiatives

• Develop and maintain internal communications systems

• Promote Firelight Media’s programs and services to producers, organizations, and funders

Qualifications

• Demonstrated success in strategic communications in film, the arts, and/or issue advocacy

• Excellent knowledge of established and emerging technologies;

• Ability to effectively prioritize and balance multiple projects simultaneously.

• Proficiency with Mailchimp (or Constant Contact), WordPress, Photoshop and Filemaker Pro.

• Familiarity with crowd funding.

• Demonstrated success in use of social media to promote the arts, artists, and/or social issues

DEVELOPMENT MANAGER

Firelight Media is seeking a Development Manager who will internally lead all of Firelight’s fundraising activities. This includes, but is not limited to:

• Working well with outside fundraising consultants on a regular basis

• Developing a development strategy and implementing an annual fundraising plan

• Grant-writing, proposal packaging and submission

• Developing creative strategies and products to enhance resources

• Prospecting and staying abreast of new funding opportunities

• Cultivating corporate and individual donors

• Developing a plan for stewardship of existing donors and funders

• Reporting in a timely fashion to the President, Board of Directors, and funders, as required.

The Development Manager will work closely with the President and program staff to develop proposals and budgets, with financial management staff to produce funder reports, and with communications staff to ensure representation of donor support in appropriate media. Thus, the Development Manager should be able to work with several teams and with different individuals simultaneously and communicate their needs to accomplish development goals and plans.

The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated track record of developing and implementing successful strategic fundraising plans for organizations with budgets of $1million or more. He/she should have a thorough understanding of private foundations and changing dynamics in philanthropy; emerging opportunities in crowd funding; and knowledge of the independent film industry, public media, and non- profit networks. Familiarity with corporate and individual donor strategies preferred.

We are seeking a dynamic individual with exceptional communications and organizational skills, independent initiative, flexibility, and good humor to be part of a fast-paced and demanding but casual work environment. They should be interested in the subject matter and be able to be facile in describing our programs to varied audiences. They should be willing to try new things and be innovative in their approach to fundraising. Must be proficient in use of relevant software and internet fundraising resources.

ACCOUNTING MANAGER

Firelight Media is searching for an Accounting Manager to join our team. While this position will be an employee of Firelight Media, it will serve the responsibilities outlined in this document for both Firelight Media (a nonprofit organization) and our sister organization Firelight Films (a corporation). Both organizations operate in close partnership and in shared space. This position will serve the following overall roles:

• Act as a vital connector for executive, development and program staff, and contractors related to finance and accounting.

• Provide guidance to key staff on each grant’s financial position, grant-specific conditions, and relevant deadlines and deliverables.

• Prepare and help to monitor program budgets and generate monthly financial reporting and related reporting as needed for management of the organization.

• Work with and oversee contracted finance and accounting service providers as applicable.

This role is the sole employee dedicated to the finance and accounting function in Firelight Media, and is critical to the infrastructure of our growing organization.

Key areas of responsibility include:

This position is intended to manage and oversee the daily operations of the accounting and finance function of Firelight Media and Firelight Films. Approximately 60% of the work will be for Firelight Media and 40% will be for Firelight Films though this may vary somewhat as film projects are initiated. Specific responsibilities include:

• Obtain and maintain a thorough understanding of the financial reporting and general ledger structure.

• Ensure the timely reporting of all monthly financial information, ensuring monthly financial reports include analysis of highlights and provide the information to management needed to manage the organization.

• Carry out all activities related to the accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll functions, including maintaining fiscal files and records to document transactions in accordance with policies and procedures.

• Manage cash flow and cash projections, including daily banking requirements.

• Coordinate the annual budgeting process with key staff and management.

• Provide interim financial forecasting and projections periodically throughout the year.

• Prepare for annual audit and serve as primary liaison with audit firm.

• Monitor and analyze processes to ensure for efficiency of procedures and sufficient internal controls.

• Respond to inquiries from the management regarding financial results and special reporting requests as applicable.

• Monitoring revenue and expenses in alignment with the budget, and communicate where actual financial activity is varying from planned activity.

• Provide recommendations related to financial impact of major decisions of the organization.

• Ensuring compliance with grant/donor restrictions on use of funds and organizational policies.

• Support the preparation of grant applications and reports, particularly regarding grant budgets and grant financial reporting.

This is a full-time position, reporting to the President. The Accounting Manager will also work closely with key program and development management positions, contracted accountants, bookkeeper, and auditors.

Qualifications:

We are seeking a dynamic individual with exceptional communications and organizational skills, independent initiative, flexibility, and good humor to be part of a fast-paced and demanding but casual work environment.

• 4-year degree in accounting or finance required

• Five or more years of experience in managing an organization’s accounting and finance function required.

• Proficiency with QuickBooks (PC and Mac), MS Excel, and other relevant software required.

• Ability to prioritize and balance multiple projects simultaneously required

• Experience building and monitoring non-profit budgets preferred.

• Experience and/or knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, practices and standards preferred.

• Experience monitoring film budgets (or equivalent project budgets) preferred.
