FIRELIGHT FILMS is a production company dedicated to producing high quality and compelling social-issue films. Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Stanley Nelson serves as the President of Firelight Films and is Executive Producer for all projects.
Nelson’s past films include: Wounded Knee which aired nationally on PBS’ American Experience as part of the landmark series on Native Americans, We Shall Remain, in 2009; Jonestown: The Life and Death of Peoples Temple which was short-listed for an Academy Award and won the International Documentary Association Award in 2006; The Murder of Emmett Till, which garnered an Emmy Award in 2002; and The Black Press: Soldiers without Swords, which won the duPont-Columbia Silver Baton and the Sundance Film Festival’s Freedom of Expression award in 1999.
In 2010, Nelson completed the Freedom Riders film and web series in time for the 50th anniversary of the 1961 Civil Rights Movement Freedom Rides in 2011. It is scheduled to air on PBS on May 16, 2011. Forthcoming projects include a one-hour special on the work of Miles Davis for WNET/Thirteen’s American Masters and a film about Olympic athlete Jesse Owens for WGBH’s American Experience.
