Sonya Childress
Sonya Childress is Firelight Media’s Community Engagement Specialist. In this role she implements national campaigns for Firelight Films and provides outreach support for Producers Lab projects.Sonya has helped organizations, philanthropists and filmmakers use film as a tool to further racial and social justice for over a decade. She has previously served as the Promotions Director for California Newsreel’s African American Perspectives Collection and Director of Strategic Partnerships for Active Voice; and has worked as an outreach consultant for Kartemquin Films, Working Films and the Independent Television Service (ITVS). Past campaigns include Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes, The Masculinity Project, Favela Rising (international), The New Americans, and more recently The Interrupters. She has spoken about social issue film campaigns at the Social Venture Network, FESPACO, National Association of Latino Independent Producers, Center for Social Media, Media that Matters Festival, and has served as a panelist for ITVS, P.O.V. and the Berkeley Film Foundation.
Sonya holds a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of California-Berkeley. She resides in Oakland, California.
