SHUKREE HASSAN TILGHMAN
More Than a Month
More Than a Month is a feature documentary that follows 29-year old African American filmmaker, Shukree Hassan Tilghman on a cross-country campaign to end Black History Month. Through a challenging, complex, and often comedic journey, More Than a Month explores what the treatment of history tells us about race and equality in “post-racial” America. Shukree received funding for More Than a Month from NBPC, the ITVS Diversity Development Fund, ITVS Open Call, and the Sundance Documentary Fund.
The film premiered nationally on the PBS series Independent Lens in February 2012. The film was also part of ITVS's Community Cinema program, with free screenings in over 100 venues throughout the United States. NBPC also sponsored outreach screenings in New York, Detroit, and at Delaware State University.
More Than a Month is now available on iTunes and Amazon and will soon be available on other digital download or streaming outlets like Netflix and Hulu. The companion mobile application, More Than A Mapp, a "mapping app" that allows users to see and upload locations relevant to African American History in their vicinity, is available for FREE in the iTunes store and coming soon to Android.
Shukree Tilghman has written and directed several short films and penned several feature screenplays. In addition to writing and directing, Shukree has also served as an associate producer on the Marco Williams feature documentary Banished, an Official Selection of the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. Shukree received a B.F.A. in Film from NYU where he was a recipient of the Martin Scorsese Filmmaker Scholarship. He is currently a Screenwriting M.F.A. candidate in the Film Division at Columbia University.
